Anyone ever model a “car wash” for you engines? (2024)

VJandPOGR Forum Member

I was watching random YouTube videos and came across a promotional piece for the Santa Fe Superchief. It’s an interesting watch. Around the 38 sec mark, it shows an engine going through the wash. This was new to me and I thought it would be something interesting to model as part of an engine service facility.

Did one when I was still doing HO. Used nylon .45 caliber rifle cleaning brushes and a whole pile of Plastruct shapes. I used it for locomotives and passenger cars.

Look up

This is a 3 part Lionel accessory from a while back. It has spinning verticle rollers to "clean the car/engine sides, a "steam cleaning" unit which blows smoke at the car, and a sparking wheel grinder (no wheels are damaged!) There are several available on *bay now.

Skytrex makes a great railcar/locomotive washing kit. The firm is based in the UK and offers a wide variety of O scale kits and detail parts.

The Lionel, American O Scale, and Skytrex kits are all great choices for wash racks, but the brush arrangements are best suited for cleaning passenger cars and cab/cowl unit diesels.

Try a search. I remember someone, possibly Alan Graziano, building one.

Absolutely - the model works best with locomotives and cars that are relatively boxy in shape. Modern diesels have too many different surfaces that cannot be cleaned with a stationary row of rotating brushes. Passenger cars, subways/ trolleys, and cab/cowl diesels have a more uniform shape, making cleaning easier.

Alan I was pretty certain it was you that modeled the train wash but in the off chance I was incorrect I didn't want to leave out the possibility it was another of our great modelers.

I loaned my three-function Lionel accessory (car wash, steam clean, and wheel grind) for use on the local train club layout during its annual holiday train show. All the visiting kids would line up for their turn to activate it. Admittedly, not a true-to-real-RR item, but it was fun to watch. Kids liked to watch the sparks flying from the wheel grinder. Sorry, no pix to share.

I used to check out the 2 Rail Scale and 3 rail scale forums regularly. I thought they were a great source for ideas that may be incorporated into a layout. I stopped looking at those forums a while ago, I think a combination of too many fixed pilot threads and the loss of some contributors whose posts I followed led to my abandoning those forums. Santiago's thread has got me thinking about scanning those forums again.

FAQs

Is it safe to wash an engine at a car wash? ›

Is it good to wash a car engine with water? ›

So only wash the engine if it's cold or lukewarm (meaning you can comfortably hold you hand on it, but DO NOT put your hand on the exhaust after running the engine as that gets insanely hot within seconds). If the car has an exposed air filter, be sure to cover it. If not, don't spray water into the air intake.
